"What would you do in a world without 'pa amb tomàquet' (bread with tomato)? After a fugitive president, accelerated general elections, and a new political party in government, a series of outrageous laws come into effect and 'pa amb tomàquet' is banned throughout Catalonia. Trucks and trucks full of sauce tomatoes abandon Catalan lands, from now on, bread with oil. This provokes demonstrations and protests, which start with peaceful acts of civil disobedience until they end in a nameless war. 'Pa amb Tomàquet, el demà' (Bread with Tomato, the Tomorrow) is a satire of a society that no longer knows where its priorities lie, that has forgotten where tomatoes come from. A roar against absurdity that only jesters and puppets can face." - Synopsis
The play explores the following hypothetical situation: an independent Catalonia where 'pa amb tomàquet' is prohibited. From this premise, it investigates what unites the community based on memory, tradition, and reflection. It is a theatrical project that emerges as a contemporary ode to Catalan culture, merging tradition with innovation to explore social and cultural dynamics that shape our most dystopian future. It is a reflection on who inhabits the cities, specifically that of Barcelona, the relationship established with the rest of rural communities throughout Catalonia, and what the future of our collective identity is.
Through docu-fiction, we explore this hypothetical future. We connect reality with fiction through Twitter, people we meet on the street, and our experience. To round it off, we get in touch with artisan producers such as Cal Tubau, who sell tomatoes at the Central Market of l'Hospitalet de Llobregat, the Salt Museum of Gerri de la Sal, which collects salt from the town's salt flats, and Manel, who makes artisanal oil in Rojals. They all provide us with their products to have a taste during the performance and thus remember the importance of food and the greatness of rurality.
The play is selected in the call for texts by OTB (On el Teatre Batega) for a dramatized reading, El Maldà shows interest and supports the show. The project premiered in February 2024. The company rehearses at CC Sandaru, where they hold an open rehearsal with a debate afterwards. Thanks to the collaboration with the Salt Museum of Gerri de la Sal, who provide us with salt pots for the tasting, the company performs a show at the museum with a post-show discussion and, of course, a taste of 'pa amb tomàquet'. This show is registered in Programa.cat.
